Acute vestibular symptoms

Often patients who experience an episode of acute vertigo, will present to the emergency department, and for good reason as these episodes may be the result of stroke or transient ischemic attack, for example. However once the more sinister diagnoses are ruled out, research shows that in an emergency room setting diagnostic errors are often made around differentiating central from peripheral causes of vertigo and that even when a peripheral cause of vertigo is identified, it is often incorrectly labelled as “viral labyrinthitis” to encompass most inner ear disorders of presumed benign origin. Research also shows us that good long-term clinical outcomes in these patients depends on a correct initial diagnosis.

At Ears in Balance we provide a simple and precise way to identify or rule out if there is peripheral vestibular dysfunction contributing to a patient’s symptoms. If you have a patient presenting with acute vestibular symptoms, a prompt vestibular assessment substantially increases the chance of identifying and correctly diagnosing the problem.
